Typhoid Fever Vaccine: What You Need to Know

Typhoid Fever Vaccine

Typhoid fever is an illness caused by the Salmonella Typhi bacteria, usually transmitted through contaminated food or water. Although cases in Mexico have decreased in recent years, it remains a health concern in areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation. For this reason, the typhoid vaccine is considered an essential preventive measure, especially for travelers and people at higher risk of exposure.

What type of vaccine is the typhoid fever vaccine?

There are two types of typhoid vaccines:

  • Injectable vaccine (Vi polysaccharide): Given intramuscularly, it provides protection for 2–3 years.
  • Oral vaccine (Ty21a): Administered in capsules taken over several doses. It offers protection for about 5 years.

Neither vaccine provides 100% immunity, but both significantly reduce the risk of infection.

Who should get vaccinated?

The vaccine is mainly recommended for:

  • People traveling to endemic areas or regions with outbreaks of typhoid fever.
  • Health workers and those exposed to wastewater or food handling.
  • Children over 2 years old (injectable) or over 6 years old (oral).

Vaccination schedule

  • Injectable vaccine: A single dose, with a booster every 2–3 years if the risk remains.
  • Oral vaccine: Four capsules taken every other day, finishing at least one week before possible exposure.

For more details, consult the official vaccination schedule of the Mexican Ministry of Health.

Side effects

Most people do not experience serious reactions. The most common side effects include:

  • Pain or redness at the injection site
  • Mild fever
  • Stomach upset or headache (more frequent with the oral vaccine)

Who should not get vaccinated?

The typhoid vaccine is not recommended for:

  • Children under 2 years old (injectable) or under 6 years old (oral)
  • People with high fever or acute illness at the time of vaccination
  • Patients with severe allergy to any vaccine component
  • Immunocompromised individuals (oral vaccine is contraindicated)
