What is 24-Hour pH-Impedance Monitoring?
24-hour pH-impedance monitoring is a diagnostic test that measures gastroesophageal reflux (acid and non-acid) over a 24-hour period. This study is essential for evaluating patients with symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), such as heartburn, regurgitation, or chronic cough, and for determining the effectiveness of treatment.
Why Perform 24-Hour pH-Impedance Monitoring?
This study is recommended for patients experiencing symptoms such as:
- Persistent heartburn.
- Regurgitation of food or liquids.
- Chronic cough or sore throat without an apparent cause.
- Difficulty swallowing (dysphagia).
pH-impedance monitoring identifies not only acid reflux but also non-acid reflux, making it a highly accurate diagnostic tool.
How is Performed?
- Preparation:
- The patient must fast for at least 6 hours before the study.
- Certain medications that may affect the results are suspended (under medical advice).
- Specific preparation instructions are provided when booking the study.
- During the study:
- A thin, flexible probe is inserted through the nose into the esophagus.
- The probe records reflux episodes over 24 hours while the patient goes about their normal activities.
- The patient must keep a symptom diary to correlate symptoms with reflux episodes.
- Results:
- Results are sent via email within a maximum of 5 business days.
- Dr. Ana Luisa Ordoñez analyzes the results and provides personalized recommendations.
